Ekata Coffee Training Programs
Helping you choose the right certification or cupping training for your needs.
I'm new to coffee or cupping. Which course should I start with?

If you’re just beginning your journey in coffee evaluation, consider:
- CQI Introduction to Q Cupping – A strong foundation in cupping mechanics using CQI standards. Great for early-stage professionals.
 - SCA Sensory Skills Foundation or Green Coffee Foundation – Introduces core sensory concepts, cupping forms, and green grading.

What is the SCA Evolved Q Program?

The SCA Evolved Q Program is a new certification developed by the Specialty Coffee Association to eventually replace the original CQI Q Grader system.
- It is a 6-day immersive course that integrates SCA’s Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) with structured cupping, calibration, and decision-making tools.
 - It is currently in pilot phase. Shaun is one of the selected few trainers who are piloting the program and Ekata is proud to be working with him to deliver it.
 - License validity and future recertification structure will be announced at a later date.

Is the CQI Q Grader still available?

				Yes—for now.
Ekata continues to offer the CQI Q Arabica Grader and CQI Q Robusta Grader courses until September 2025, after which they will begin to phase out globally.
What's the difference between the CQI Q Grader and the SCA Evolved Q Program?

				| CQI Q Arabica / Robusta Grader | SCA Evolved Q Program | |
|---|---|---|
| Certifying Body | Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) | Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) |
| Current Status | Available until September 2025 | In pilot; full launch later this year |
| Focus | CQI protocols; 22-exam format | Based on CVA; updated calibration & forms |
| License Validity | 3 years | To be announced |
| Format | Classic 6-day Q structure | Fully redesigned 6-day training course |
What is SCA CVA for Cuppers?

SCA CVA for Cuppers is a structured training and bridging program for those working with cupping and quality evaluation. It:
- Equips professionals with the tools and language of the SCA Coffee Value Assessment
 - Helps existing Q Graders transition to the Evolved Q system
 - Includes use-of-form and evaluation components and has a pass/fail outcome
 - It is not a license, but it is a required step for Q Graders transitioning into the new system

I’m a certified Q Grader. Do I need to take CVA for Cuppers?

Yes — if you wish for your current Q certification to be recognized under the new SCA Evolved Q Program, you must take SCA CVA for Cuppers as a mandatory bridging step.
What happens if I don’t take CVA for Cuppers?

Your Q certificate will remain valid until its expiry date, but:
- It will not be recognized under the SCA Evolved Q system
 - You may not qualify for future recertification or upgrades under the new structure
 - You may need to re-enter the full Evolved Q pathway later on
 - Taking CVA for Cuppers ensures continuity and future eligibility

Should I take CVA for Cuppers before the Evolved Q?

It’s not mandatory, as the Evolved Q Program is a complete 6-day training.
However, taking CVA for Cuppers in advance may be an advantage, especially for current Q Graders or those unfamiliar with CVA descriptors and scoring logic.
Should I take CQI Q Arabica, Q Robusta, or wait for the Evolved Q?

				- CQI Q Arabica / Q Robusta Grader – Still relevant for organizations, exporters, or labs continuing with the current CQI protocols in the short term.
 - CQI Q Robusta Grader – Especially important for those working directly with Robusta producers or markets that require it.
 - SCA Evolved Q Program – Recommended for those entering the industry now or wanting to align with the latest international standard.

Can I take both Q and CVA?

Yes. In fact, many professionals take both:
- CVA for Cuppers improves alignment with value-based cupping systems and supports calibration across cultures.
 - Q Grader certification is still the benchmark license in many green buying, roasting, and production environments.

Where can I find more official information about these programs?
